Book Review: Cinder & Ella by Kelly Oram

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve got one word for you…unputdownable. Want a few more? Enchanting, engaging, sweet, heartwarming…and I could go on and on. The bottom line-this is an amazing story that will capture your heart, shoot to the top of your favorites list and become one of those stories that you’ll want to reread…many times.

There were so many fantastic characters-Cinder being my favorite-and the secondary characters really contributed a lot to my enjoyment of this story. They were just as well developed as the two main characters and provided quite a bit of depth…and I really liked Vivian and Rob (though if anyone ever finds a young man like Rob anywhere on this earth, you better snag and keep him as I don’t know that someone like him could ever exist). And a story based on Cinderella wouldn’t be complete without those nasty characters…though in this case, Ella actually has quite a few of those instead of just a couple which does up the empathy factor for the reader.

The story itself flows smoothly and sucks you right in from the start; it does touch on some emotional topics and how those are handled in both a high school atmosphere (unfortunately for Ella-you’ll want to give her principal a huge piece of your mind by the time you’re done reading) as well as the public eye. This story teaches important lessons, stirs the emotional pot, and will ultimately embed itself in your heart. And having the story told from both Cinder and Ella’s points of view gives you a much broader view of the story, and a better understanding of both of their situations, thoughts and feelings.

There are a few points at which you will want to make sure you’ve suspended your disbelief (in particular I have a difficult time believing Ella should still be under her father’s guardianship as long as she is since she is now considered an adult, especially with the progress she made and the intelligence and mental fortitude she so clearly displays)…but that should be the case with most fiction books anyway.

If you love retellings of the Cinderella story, this is definitely one you will not want to miss. I certainly loved this story, and give it 5 stars…and a spot on my top recommendations list. Good for teens and up (though for teens, please be aware there is some cursing, especially from Cinder’s POV).

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
